DAY#30 - Secret Agent Drops
A few years ago I sat down at a men's bible study breakfast and across from me sat our pastor. After bible study, food was served and along with that tea & coffee. As I was dusting my omelet in pepper, I peered across the table to see my pastor quietly slip a small vial of liquid out of his pocket and squeeze a few drops into his drink. What was he up to? Was he taking some sort of odd vitamins, or medicine? Did he carry his own flavoring around with him? I spent the rest of my day wondering.
About a week later in a conversation a mutual friend told me that my pastor sweetens stuff using stevia
. Now, I had never heard of it before, but I was thrilled he wasn't taking speed. Apparently, the stevia plant's leaves produce this natural substance 200 times sweeter than sugar and it is calorie free. I stored this info somewhere in my mind for years.
Since starting my lifestyle change I wanted to eat healthier, cut calories and at the same time ditch the artificial sweeteners cause they are not good for me.
The issue for me has always been a fight between the unknown and known risks of the artificial sweeteners and the benefit of consuming less calories. So this past week I decided to turn over a new leaf and tried stevia.
I bought some stevia in packet form and some in secret agent drop form(like my pastor). I saw it even comes flavored in chocolate, vanilla & mint for people who like that stuff. My first test of stevia has been my green tea. I used to buy diet green from Turkey Hill but cut back due caffeine & artificial sweeteners concerns. I got myself some de-caffeinated green tea and brewed my own and added a few droppers of stevia and TADA! I am backin business! I am still consuming about half of the green tea i used to but I am healthier for it, I think!
